He had let convenience, grief, and class prejudice do the work of erasure. That was part of the crime too.
Maybe not the legal part.
But certainly the human one.
Jonah stood beside the piano the whole time, small and composed and exhausted in a way no child should ever be. A policewoman brought him a blanket from somewhere. He thanked her with careful politeness and wrapped it around himself without letting go of the ring.
At one point Victor looked at him and whispered, “Do you hate me?”
Jonah answered with terrible honesty.

Victor lowered his eyes.

“Was that your melody?” he asked Victor.
Victor could barely speak. “Mine and his mother’s.”
The pianist nodded once.
Then he looked at Jonah. “You kept it beautifully.”

Jonah nodded but did not trust himself to speak.

Jonah stood in the doorway for a long time.

He walked to it immediately.
“Here,” he said.
Victor stopped breathing for half a second.

Jonah touched the marble.
“My mother said she slipped on ash carrying me down,” he murmured. “She said when she hit this edge, that’s when she knew she couldn’t come back for anything else.”
Victor gripped the doorframe so hard his knuckles whitened.
“I never came here again,” he said.
Jonah didn’t look at him. “I know.”
“How?”
“My mother said if you loved the room more than the child, you’d preserve it. If you loved the child more, you’d never bear to enter.”
Victor shut his eyes.

Jonah turned then and looked around slowly.
“This was my room first.”

Jonah stepped to the window and stared out at the sea.

Victor looked up sharply.

Victor felt cold all over. “Who?”
Jonah finally turned.

The estate’s former groundskeeper had already admitted a woman matching Celeste’s description ordered him to burn a box of nursery journals the week after the fire. Victor stared at the nursery and understood that the truth he had uncovered in the lobby was not a single betrayal.
It was an ecosystem.
He looked at Jonah—the boy, his son, no longer a rumor or grave or unresolved ache, but a living indictment standing in a room that should have been his before the world rearranged him into a disappearance.
“Can I ask you something?” Victor said.
Jonah’s expression remained guarded. “You usually do.”
Victor almost laughed, but grief got there first.
“Did Lena… hate me at the end?”
Jonah considered that longer than Victor expected.
Then he answered in the plainest possible way.
“No.”
The word hit like both mercy and punishment.
Victor’s face crumpled.
Jonah continued.
“She said you were weaker than you were evil. She said that didn’t make your choices smaller. It just made them sadder.”

An attorney who had amended fire records.
A former security director who had destroyed footage logs.
A house steward who had signed false inventory statements regarding the night of the blaze.
Each arrest widened the scandal and shrank the comfortable myth the city had told itself about how tragedies happen among the powerful.
As for Victor, he did not escape cleanly, nor should he have.
He lost board seats, social standing, and every easy version of his own innocence. Foundations distanced themselves. Editorials called him what he was: not the architect of the fire, perhaps, but a man whose grief had been cushioned by privilege enough to let other people disappear inside it. Jonah did not move into Victor’s mansion.

Victor paid, because of course he did. But money was no longer allowed to choose intimacy for him. That mattered.
Jonah continued piano.
