She laughed.

James shook his head.

Her photograph rested on a small table beside a jar of soil from the first twelve acres they had owned.
“She would have hated all this attention,” James said.
Everyone who knew Ruth laughed.
“She would have said the money should have gone to drainage tile.”
More laughter.
His voice softened.
“She wrote something once. No one survives alone just because pride says they should. I built everything here trying to understand what she already knew.”
He looked toward the tractors lined up beyond the barn doors.
“These machines are not symbols of wealth. They are tools. Same as a shovel, a wrench, a hand extended at the right moment.”
Anna stood in the crowd, wiping one eye and pretending dust was involved.
Elena attended too, wearing work boots now instead of office heels. Several Agro Max service techs came with her. They spent the afternoon answering questions under a tent while farmers ate barbecue and children climbed onto tractor steps for photos.
Near sunset, James walked alone to the ridge above the training field.
Ruth’s favorite place.
From there, he could see the barn, the tractors, the fields beyond, and the old pickup parked crookedly near the fence.
He took off his straw hat.
“I bought thirty of them,” he said softly.
The wind moved through the grass.
He smiled.
“You would have told me to negotiate harder.”
For a moment, he could almost hear her.

James patted the dashboard.

James protested.

Then she would point toward the training fields.
“Because the person in front of you may not be one account. They may be a whole community. And even if they are not, they are still a person.”
James grew older.
His hands stiffened.

James laughed.
“No, son. Trucks don’t buy tractors.”

James looked around the barn.
