The light had been green for four seconds before anyone noticed.
Behind them, horns started — first one, then three, then a chorus of frustration cutting through the downpour. But inside the black sedan, time had stopped entirely. The rain drummed against the roof like it was trying to break through. The windshield wipers swept back and forth in their mechanical rhythm, indifferent to everything happening inside the car.
Margaret Hale had not moved in almost a minute.
Her hand was pressed flat against her sternum, fingers curled slightly inward, holding something beneath the fabric of her coat. Her eyes were fixed on the boy standing outside — still, soaked, trembling — his thin fingers pressed against the glass like he was trying to hold himself upright. “Open the window,” she said.

“Why?” Margaret asked.
Miss Cora’s hands tightened on top of the folder. “Because of this.” She opened it.

The door at the end of the hallway swung open.

Margaret couldn’t speak.
“He kept it every day,” Miss Cora said. “Even when the other children teased him for wearing it. He never took it off.” She looked at Margaret steadily. “I want you to know that.”
“Thank you,” Margaret managed. It was inadequate. It was the only word she had.
Miss Cora nodded once, precise and final. “Take good care of him,” she said. And then, more softly, “He knows how to be loved. I made sure of that. I just couldn’t give him the one love that was missing.”
Adam moved in on a Saturday. He had three bags — a duffel, a backpack, and a smaller bag just for his books. He stood at the front door of their house and looked up at the facade the way he looked at things he was assessing, taking inventory, learning.
“It’s bigger than I thought,” he said.
“Is that okay?” Richard asked.

But slowly, over the days that followed, other things surfaced. The way he left his shoes exactly where he stepped out of them — at the edge of the kitchen, at the foot of the stairs. The way he hummed while he read, just barely, a tuneless sound that Margaret had to stop herself from remarking on because she loved it too much to risk making him self-conscious about it. “Is this one of your invented places?” she asked.
