“What’s your mother’s name?” he whispered.

He walked toward it.
He was still holding the photograph.
He reached the car and looked through the open door and found what he had already, somewhere in the preceding three minutes, begun to understand he would find.
She was in the driver’s seat, reclined slightly, her head tipped back against the headrest.
