In 1993, in southeastern Australia, a baby boy named Tomm Tennent came into the world — and immediately left every doctor in the room speechless. Before he even drew his first breath, ultrasounds had already flagged something deeply unusual. His parents faced an incredibly difficult choice about whether to continue the pregnancy.

His father, Geoff Tennent, made the call that would define everything: “We sort of discussed this between us, and we decided what’s meant to be is meant to be.” And so Tomm’s extraordinary story began.
When he arrived, the sight was unlike anything the medical team had ever encountered. His skin was so deeply wrinkled and folded it resembled that of a much older child — or even an elderly person. His mother Debbie recalled the moment he was placed on her chest: “My heart came up to my throat, but at the same time, it was lovely to pick him up and cuddle him.”

Doctors were completely baffled. No diagnosis. No treatment. No clear answers.
After nearly two and a half months in hospital, researchers finally made a breakthrough. Tomm had an abnormally high concentration of hyaluronic acid in his body — the same substance that gives Shar Pei puppies their signature wrinkles. In those dogs, the levels naturally drop as they grow, causing the skin to smooth out. Doctors hoped Tomm’s body would follow the same path.

And it did. Dr. Andrew Ramsden’s prediction proved correct — Tomm’s skin gradually adjusted as he aged. The transformation wasn’t without hardship, though. Growing up looking different brought ridicule and exclusion, including being kept out of school at times. But he pushed through all of it.

More than 30 years later, Tomm Tennent lives in Frankston, Victoria, Australia. He’s happily married to a woman named Hannah, and keeps a low profile on social media. His own life philosophy, shared simply on his Facebook page, says it all: “Life is simple. You make choices and don’t look back.”

From a baby who baffled the entire medical world — to a man living quietly and fully on his own terms. What a journey. 🙌
