The words echoed in the crypt.

Victoria looked at me.

“And now the child stands here alive, educated, employed, not dead in some ditch where Ana’s choices would have taken her. You all speak as if survival is not a form of mercy.”

I stared at her.

The woman who raised me had skipped meals so I could eat. She had worked with fever. She had moved apartments when strange men asked neighbors questions. She had hidden my birthmark under bangs until I was old enough to stop asking why.

“Do not call what Ana did a bad choice,” I said.
